Summary
The authors report the results of the virological and serological investigations for the detection of canine respiratory coronavirus (CRCoV) in Italy. Of a total of 109 lung samples analysed by RT-PCR only one sample tested positive for CRCoV RNA, that had been collected from a dog infected simultaneously by canine parvovirus type 2 and canine coronavirus. Sequence analysis of the RTPCR product revealed a strict relationship between the Italian strain and CRCoV strain T101, recently isolated in United Kingdom. By means of an ELISA test, carried out on 216 dog sera collected between 1994 and 2006, CRCoV antibodies were found only in samples collected in 2005 (23/60) and 2006 (19/71).
