Summary

Companion Animal Behaviour therapy is a pluridisciplinary field composed by scientific areas that are not of exclusive competence of veterinary science. If we consider the research areas and the scientific contributions to the companion animal behaviour field, we realize that veterinary science, compared to ethology, physiology and experimental psychology, has a limited role. Nevertheless, it is important to consider that behavioural diagnosis and therapy require a complete and in-depth picture of the animal state, included its physical conditions. The possibility to recognise or exclude a state of illness of the whole individual animal is up to the veterinary surgeon and, when the behaviour therapist is not a veterinarian, there are many diagnostic and therapeutic limitations.
