Summary

Starting from the European Commission slogan “Diseases do not respect frontiers”, this paper stresses the importance of an appropriate vaccine prophylaxis in imported puppies, with particular regard to illegal imports, a really actual problem in these years, which may exacerbate diseases unfortunately already present in Italy (eg, parvovirus enteritis) and reintroduce diseases virtually disappeared thanks to regular vaccination (eg, distemper, infectious hepatitis). Lastly, special consideration is given to rabies vaccination, starting from the new EU Regulation 576/2013 on the non-commercial movement of pet animals and the new Pet Passport.
