Summary
Various psychotropic agents are used to alter animal behaviour in the course of treatment of behaviour problems. These range from well know licensed drugs to food additives. In general these agents are most effectively used as an adjunct to environmental management and behaviour modification techniques. Many psychotropic agents decrease arousal and motivation.
Such non-specific changes may alter the problematic interaction between the pet and the owner sufficiently to facilitate critical behaviour modification programmes. In other cases, psychotropic agents are used more specifically to treat specific underlying physiological processes.
