Reptiles as reservoir of salmonella spp.: Epidemiological survey on good hygiene practices in management

Summary

A cross–sectional study was conducted to investigate good hygiene practices in management of reptiles. Fifty owners were interviewed and the faeces of their reptiles were screened for the presence of Salmonella spp. The prevalence of salmonella carriers was 46%, 70 % among lizards and 29 % among snakes. In general, the owners have knowledge of the management of reptiles but a little concern of hygiene practices, especially regarding prevention of salmonella infection.
