Summary
A 4 years old Testudo hermanni, of about 220 g was examined for paralysis of the hind limbs; the animal also presented apathy, decreased food intake and lack of defecation for about 2 weeks. During the clinical examination no particular alterations were noted except the walking without the use of the hind limbs. The cloacal calculus was diagnosed by radiography and subsequently confirmed by cloacoscopy. After sedation, the calculus was fragmented using cheek teeth cutter for rabbits and small rodents, then each fragment was removed by cloacal washes and with the use of the endoscopic forceps. The animal started immediately to defecate and walk normally and, after a week, resumed its normal appetite. This work is the first report for this disease in a very small tortoise.
